More Information

Paris, the capital of France, is located in northern France on both banks of the Seine River, 145 km (90 mi) from the river's mouth on the English Channel. A total of 2,135,300 (2002) inhabitants live in Paris proper, and almost 11 million persons (1999) live in greater Paris (the Ile-de-France region), which is one of Europe's largest metropolitan areas. A city of world importance and the business, historic, intellectual, diplomatic, religious, educational, artistic, and tourist center of France, Paris owes its prosperity in large part to its favorable position on the Seine, which has been a major commercial artery since the Roman period. Though Paris is in flux culturally and socially, it lures travelers for the same reasons it always has. You'll still find classic sights like the Tour Eiffel, Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, Sacre-Coeur, and all those atmospheric cafes, as well as daring new projects like the Grande Arche de La Defense, the Cite des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Cite de la Musique etc. And don't forget the parks, gardens, and squares; the Champs-Elysees and other grand boulevards; the river Seine and its quays. Paris's beauty is still overwhelming, especially at night, when it truly is the City of Light.

Paris is the head of barge and ship navigation on the Seine and is the fourth most important port in France (after Marseille, Le Havre, and Dunkerque). The Loire, Rhine, Rhone, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers can be reached by canals connecting with the Seine, and a large amount of the imports and exports of the city are transported via water. Total freight carried to and from the port annually amounts to 43 million U.S. tons. Paris is also a major rail, highway, and air transportation hub. Two international airports, Orly and Charles de Gaulle, as well as Le Bourget (for domestic flights), serve the city. De Gaulle ranks as the fifth busiest international airport in the world and Orly as the seventh. No monument is more daring than the 300 meters high Eiffel tower built for the 1889 Paris world exhibition. The Eiffel Tower is a must for your first visit to Paris and France.

The City of Light is the apex of architectural beauty, artistic expression, and culinary delight. Each of Paris's 20 arrondissements possesses a unique style and flavor. You'll want to decide which district appeals most to you and then try to find accommodations there. Later on, try to visit as many areas as you can so you get the full taste of Paris. Paris is also full of beautiful hotels. Hotel Du Leman is a completely renovated 3 star hotel located in the heart of Paris. The Francois 1er is a jewel in the luxury hotel industry of Paris. The Le Meridien Etoile is a deluxe hotel located half an hour from both the Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport. Air France shuttle bus stops at the hotel and departs every 20 minutes to

Charles de Gaulle Airport . Just a few minutes away from the Eiffel Tower, Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the Luxembourg Gardens,Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the Luxembourg Gardens, Le Meridien Montparnasse offers all the facilities of an international first-class hotel. Also Hilton La Defense, Victoria palace, Royal Elysees,Hotel De Castiglione, Comfort inn, Glasgow Hotel, Hotel Residence, Hotel le faubourg are descent hotel in Paris.
